Fools Rush in 21st Century Style

After the recent negative press about Nanosys, the heavyweight Economist wheels out its 40-pound cannons and fires a broadside of its own, taking as its angle nanopundit Josh Wolfe’s predictions of a Netscape scale nanotech IPO in 2004.

The conclusion? “Nanotechnology’s Netscape moment…may still be some way off”

This is echoed in Wired’s coverage titled “Investors are touting nanotech as the new biotech. Don’t believe them.”

Wired ask “what about all those newsletters and all those nanotech indexes created by brokerage houses? The answer is that they are excitement in search of something to be excited about.”

“I’d say we’re a little early,” (Warren)Packard (of DFJ) recently told an audience. “But we need to start somewhere.” True enough. For the rest of us, though, that somewhere is further on up the road.”

Their conclusion, “IPO buyers beware.”
