Paul Bagot of the University of Oxford raises an important point when it comes to the reporting of nanotechnology in a letter to the Guardian, pointing out that although both the nanotechnology report and the Guardian article mention particulate emissions from vehicle exhausts you should really emphasise that these nanoparticles have been generated by internal combustion engines and by industry for many years. They are not a new danger created by nanotechnology labs.
In fact, particles from smelters, diesel engines or tyre wear will all be both better understood and regulated as a result of our enhanced understanding of the nanoscale.
