Taking the Urine

A story that made us laugh so hard we nearly reconstituted our rations appears in New Scientist this week.

In case anyone was wondering what the US Army has been up to, and no Lev Nazarov, it’s got nothing to do with nanotech arms races, it involves chicken, rice, nanotech and urine.

In yet another water related story, US boffins have come up with a ration “surrounded by a plastic membrane made of a nanofibre that, according to its inventors, can filter out 99.9 percent of microbes and the most harmful toxic compounds, allowing only clean water to get to the preserved food.”

The result is, you can use dirty water, or even urine to reconstitute it. The downside is that the membrane is too coarse to filter out urea, so the food will still taste like Greenland Shark.
