Brain the Size of a Planet

A Future European Patent Examiner?

There is an interesting nanotechnology meeting taking place next week in the Hague, the International symposium on nanotechnology and patenting (we’ll be there). It’s good to see the European Patent Office attempting to come to grips with nanotechnology patenting, to avoid creating a disastrous free for all where the only long term winners will be the hordes of patent trolls already jostling for space on the sidelines.

One of the major problems is the breadth of knowledge required by patent examiners in order to look not only at nanotechnology, but prior art and applications in biotech, electronics, materials, pharmaceuticals….you see the problem? Using current methods, we’ll need patent examiners with brains the size of a minor planet (and no, we don’t mean Ray Kurzweil).
