Cientifica Helps move Quantum Crypto Out of the Lab

While Cientifica is best known for nanotechnologies we do in fact have activities in many other areas of technology, from robotics to IT. In each of these, our mission is the same, translating science into business. As a result, Cientifica and its partner company Quantum Information Partners LLP (QIP) has spent the past two years examining the practical uses of secure data transmission using quantum cryptography.

Naturally, secure transmission of data is of vital importance to the financial industry, which is why QIP organised a recent demonstration of the technology at the Bank of England, involving Qinetiq, Toshiba Cambridge and MagiQ running quantum cryptography over fibre optic cable and in free air. Other interested parties involved in the trials were the Department of Trade and Industry, and VISA international.

As the UKs science minister Lord Sainsbury noted “Quantum cryptography is now in cost range and therefore banks should be looking at it.”
