Is nanotech an industry or not…

We are amazed that this debate is still going on in public, sooner or later the nanotech industry will merge with the Flat Earth Society and the new organisation will be run by Elvis from a flying saucer.

Dan Colbert (co-founder of CNI) says no to the nanotech industry hypothesis, while Sam Brauer (Principal at Nanotech Plus LLC, market research and consulting firm) says yes (and you don’t have to ask our view).

Sam offers no definition of what his ‘nanotech industry’ is, only a rather patronising statement that he has a much broader perspective than Dan and can therefore see much more of what is going on. If you’d like to read more of Sam’s view of the nanotech industry you can try looking at the website of Nanotech Plus LLC . When we looked it had mysteriously vanished…gone to join the nanotech industry perhaps…but seems to have popped back up again.

Sam’s advice for anyone trying to get to grips with nanotechnology is that it “is not an easy concept to wrap your head around” and rather non helpfully defines nanotech as:

“Nanotechnology is the transition from the classical to the quantum regime. Nanotechnology involves the design and use of quantum-based properties of a material. Typically the transition from classical to quantum properties occurs at dimensions of 30 nanometers or less.

Non-technical definition: It’s a practical expansion of the periodic table. Nanosized materials have different properties than conventionally-sized materials and therefore can be used for different applications.”

Hmm, no wonder he is confused about the existence of a nanotech industry. If nanotech can expand the periodic table then pretty much anything is possible.
